basketball-stars-thumbBasketball Stars

[Price: Free/In-App Purchases]
Head-to-head online games can be a lot of fun. Games like Clash Royale have seen huge success, pitting two players against one another in real time. Basketball Stars is just like that, except with basketball. Simple swipe-to-shoot mechanics and a limited number of possible moves makes this game easy to play, so when it comes to a head-to-head match with an online player, the key is timing. When you’re playing “Attacker-Defender” mode, you’re able to block the opposing player’s shots and steal the ball, and on offense you can shift left and right, pump fake and score by getting your timing just right. I wouldn’t give this app the best rating when it comes to design, but it’s certainly a lot fun, and hey, that’s really what iPad games are about.

combatant-drop-thumbCombatant Drop

[Price: Free/In-App Purchases]
Sometimes you want to jump into a game and just go for a high score. Combatant Drop is that kind of game. This endless free fall game pits you against countless boobytraps such as frail blocks, saws, landmines and more, while your mission is to collect weapons, ammo and bonuses – all while managing to not fall to your imminent demise.

The gameplay is simple but challenging as the speed increases, but even after suffering a fall to end your streak, this game is hard to put down. You can have a lot of fun with this game for free, but if you want to get rid of the ads, any in-app purchase will do the trick.

does-not-commute-iosDoes Not Commute

[Price: Free/$2.99 Premium Upgrade]
In this frantic driving-turned-strategy game, which made our overall list of The 15 Best iPad Games, you must race against the clock to make sure everyone gets to where they are going! Each move you make with individual characters will repeat itself with the start of a new driver until you’ve completed the level. The path you choose for your current driver will remain, so plan ahead or pay the price! Rightfully so, Does Not Commute was a winner of Apple’s Design Awards back in 2015 and it still holds its own as one of best looking games to date!

dots-and-co-thumbDots & Co

[Price: Free/In-App Purchases]
If you’re the kind of person who likes a game that’s easy to pick up and hard to put down – you’ve come to the right place. Dots & Co comes from the same makers of Dots and Two Dots, and is built around the same concept – connect the dots to earn points. The game features newly-designed levels and includes “companions” that you meet along the way to help solve puzzles. It’s a beautifully-designed app that is a ton of fun to play.

dunkers-thumbDunkers

[Price: Free/$1.99 Ad-Free]
How do I explain this game? In Dunkers, you’re a character with abnormally long arms who’s objective is to get the basketball into the other player’s goal. The catch? You have two controls – forward and back. Using your long arms, you can propel yourself forward, launching off of the ground, the other player or the “walls” and hopefully find yourself “dunking” on your opponent. The design and gameplay simplicity is what earns this one a spot on the best free iPad games list.

merged!-thumbMerged

[Price: Free/$1.99 Ad-Free]
Merged is a tile-based puzzle game with the goal of leaving only one puzzle piece on the board. Matching colored tiles, three or more, will cause them to merge (hence the name) into only one tile. Keep this up and you will earn yourself an “M” tile. Combine three of these and you’ve succeeded. Let me go ahead and say, it’s harder than it sounds.

polyforge-thumbPolyforge

[Price: Free/$0.99 Ad-Free]
Beautiful and simplistic, Polyforge presents players with soft colors and geometric shapes, paired with gentle tones to create an almost therapeutic experience. The goal is to make contact with each side of the polygonal shape on the screen. Each hit creates a unique tone, and when sequenced, forms a nice melody for each level. This is a great game to jump in and play when you have a few minutes to spare or when your brain needs a break from work, school, etc.

snakebird-thumbSnakebird

[Price: Free/$3.99 Extended Version]
It’s a snake, no it’s a bird – it’s Snakebird! Ok, dumb jokes aside, Snakebird is not for the faint of heart. The characters might be cute, but the level design is among the most challenging I’ve ever come across. I’m going to be honest with you – I had to take to the internet to figure out the solution to level 1!

traffic-rider-thumbTraffic Rider

[Price: Free/In-App Purchases]
Who can honestly say they’ve never dreamed of weaving in and out of traffic on a high-powered sports bike? Traffic Rider puts you behind the wheel handlebars of various motorcycles and allows you to do just that. The higher your level, the faster your vehicle, and the closer you get to the other cars on the road, the more time you are spared in a race to beat the clock to the finish line. Pro tip: you get more points by dodging oncoming traffic. I was pleasantly surprised with the graphics in this one. Definitely worth a shot.

walls-and-balls-thumbWalls & Balls

[Price: Free/$1.99 Ad-Free]
Walls & Balls is a game that is all about one thing – getting your ball into a hole. How do you do that? While the ball travels across the screen, you draw lines (walls) with your finger to ricochet and redirect the ball until it finds its way into the hole. Easy enough.

As you progress through the levels, new, unnamed obstacles will arise, such as the spinny spiky thing, and the giant spring contraption. You’ll also find power ups scattered around that will slow the ball down or cause the hole to widen for a brief period. My only complaint with this game is that, at least in the beginning, the difficulty level progresses pretty slow.
