Even Monsters Get Sick is an interactive book where kids can help Harry figure out what’s wrong with his new monster. It teaches critical thinking skills and the book also comes with some games that kids can play to interact even more. The idea behind this premise is that it helps kids deal with everyday issues through game play and reading which is about as good of a way as any. It comes with a reasonable price tag and no in-app purchases

Farm 123

[Price: $2.99]
Farm 123 is an educational game aimed at toddlers. It’s also an interactive book much like Even Monsters Get Sick so if you’ve done that, you know what to expect here. The game teaches kids how to count to 10 while simultaneously exposing them to various types of animals. They do all kinds of wacky things which adds to the enjoyment and kids win stars for completing games. It’s $2.99 for the full app with no in-app purchases.

LetterSchool

LetterSchool is an educational app that helps teach toddlers how to write letters. Despite the proliferation of computers and typing, learning to write is still considered a key skill for kids to learn. It’s a fairly simple app overall and its main function is to help teach kids how to write letters and numbers by using tracing. It features uppercase and lowercase letters and it comes complete with a progression system to help keep score for up to three players.

Mini-U: Zoo Alphabet

Mini-U: Zoo Alphabet isn’t the most popular app on the list but it seems to be a fairly solid application. This game is a card game that comes with about 60 flash cards filled with various animal pictures and pictures of letters. It’s technically supposed to teach kids about the alphabet, but much like Farm 123 above, it also teaches about animals as well. There are mini-games included and each card also comes with a set of fun animations. There are also no in-app purchases.

Monkey Preschool Lunchbox

By contrast, Monkey Preschool Lunchbox is one of the more popular preschool and toddler apps available right now. This one is actually several games mashed up into one application. The games are all educational and will help teach kids about counting, letters, colors, shapes, and critical thinking skills like matching and the difference between two things. It’s reasonably priced with no in-app purchases and even has a decent rating.

Originator Inc Collection

Originator Inc is a development studio on iTunes that specializes in kids games. They have a number of great titles in the “Endless” franchise, including Endless Reader, Endless Numbers, Endless Alphabet, and some other stuff like Mr Potato Head and BeBop Blox. Pretty much all of these titles are pretty good and feature more-or-less the same kinds of elements with slightly different lessons for kids to learn. Do beware as some of these do have in-app purchases.

Shape the Village

Shape the Village, as the name implies, is an app that focuses around teaching children about shapes. The app includes 16 activities in total that teach all about shapes, including identification, telling the difference between them, and, of course, what they all look like. It’s made for toddlers so the app is easy to use and even includes some small bits like night mode to give it a little more flair. It also comes with a reasonable price tag and no in-app purchases.

TallyTots Counting

[Price: $2.99]
TallyTots Counting is another game where the premise is built right into the title of the app. This one focuses on counting and comes with 20 mini-games to help kids learn how to count. It’s a simple application and the games shouldn’t be too challenging for toddlers to grasp. Along with the various games, there is a sing-along song about counting and a count assistant that lets toddlers count all the way to 100. There are also no in-app purchases in this app.

Tiny Firefighters

Tiny Firefighters is an activity book style of app that includes activities that are based around the lives of police officers and firefighters. Some of the activities include helping firefighters put out fires, getting animals out of sticky situations, and catching burglars who are stealing various things. It’s not entirely educational although there are messages in there that stealing is wrong and that they should help out people and animals in need. In any case, it’s $2.99 with no in-app purchases.

Last, and certainly not least, is the Toca Boca collection. Toca Boca is another development studio that focuses on kids games and they have a ton to choose from. Some of the more popular titles include Toca Kitchen 2, Toca Hair Salon 2, Toca Nature, and there are plenty of other options. Most of the titles come with a cheap price tag and no in-app purchases and most of them are either educational or at least carry a positive message. They’re good apps done by good developers.
