Social gaming has really taken off over the last 10 years or so and it seems almost difficult to find a game that doesn’t have a social component. Some games are better than others and there are some still that really take hold of the social gaming component and really make it sing. In this list, we’ll take a look at the best iPad multiplayer games.

Asphalt 8: Airborne

Asphalt 8: Airborne is an awesome game all on its own. The tilt-to-steer mechanics, graphics, and game play content are all far better than average which makes it a great game in its own right. However, there is also an online component that allows you to race against your friends in a variety of ways. There is the standard, straightforward multiplayer along with ghost runs (to challenge everyone’s best time), and there are leaderboards to help you keep track of who is doing what. It’s also free to play.

Clash Royale

From the makers of Clash of Clans, Clash Royale is a PvP tower defense game that is set in the same world and with many of the same characters as its predecessor. Players stack their decks with various characters and meet in the battle arena to see who will come out on top. As you progress through the game, you earn more and more cards of the same character, eventually allowing you to level them up. Just like in the original Clash, you can join a clan, help your clan mates out by donating cards, and partake in friendly battle to earn your stripes. Compared to Clash of Clans, this one is a little less strategic, but makes up for it in the action department.

Dungeon Hunter 5

Gameloft’s Dungeon Hunter series is a fairly respected MMORPG in the gaming space and Dungeon Hunter 5 is the latest iteration. With it comes improved graphics over older titles and a metric ton of stuff to do. In classic MMORPG fashion, you can play the game online with friends in co-op mode or fight against people in PvP mode. It’s an involved game with a lot of content and Gameloft even does weekly and monthly events to help keep things fresh.

Heads Up!

Ok, don’t jump to any conclusions just yet. While “multiplayer” to many means online, PvP battles, it can also mean getting to have some fun with the ones around you. Instead of having your face buried in the screen, Heads Up forces you to interact with another person. The goal of the game is to guess the person/place/thing that is on your devices screen while you are holding it up to your forehead. It sounds like a cheesy “game night” sort of thing, but with different categories and topics to play within, it actually results in a lot of fun. This is a great game to play with some friends when you have nothing better to do on a Friday night.

Iron Kill

Fast-paced robot fighting action. Metal-on-metal sound effects. Boss battles and real-time online fights. Does it get any better than that? Iron Kill is my kind of multiplayer. Growing up playing button mashers like Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Tekken and more, Iron Kill is right up my alley, and if you’re into fast-paced action, it will be yours too. In the single player campaign you start at .the bottom and climb up the ranks, unlocking new bots and upgrading your existing ones. Once you’ve mastered your bot you can take them into the arena. I’m a huge fan of the gameplay in Iron Kill, especially the multiplayer, but I do wish the graphics were a couple notches above where they are.

Might and Mayhem: Battle Arena

Might and Mayhem is a turn-based RPG in which you embark on quests to defeat the Dragon King. Along the way you encounter a variety of enemies and your band of fighters must defeat them to get to the Dragon King. What I love about the single player campaign is the back story that you get for each new enemy you come across. Instead of just putting you in front of some strong characters, you learn a little bit about them before, well, you slaughter them. Multiplayer PvP battles fiction the same way – a turn-based style. A delicate balance between defense (supporting your fighters) and offense is the key to victory. Warning: PvP battles in the arena can take a while to complete.

Modern Combat

Modern Combat is arguably the most popular FPS series available on mobile and Modern Combat 5 is probably the best of the bunch. This game seeks to emulate the popular console/PC shooters and gives you a campaign to play through as well as online matchmaking to enjoy. If you’ve played a modern Halo or Call of Duty game, you kind of know what to expect with this game as you shoot your opponents, upgrade your loadouts and weapons, and plenty more. There is a lot of content and you do eventually get used to the touch screen controls.

Riptide GP2

[Price: $0.99 with in-app purchases]
Riptide GP2 is one of the cleanest, most complete feeling racing games available today. Instead of cars, you upgrade, unlock, and race with wave runners in this title. The graphics are really good and the controls are easy enough to learn. The online multiplayer includes player vs player races with as little as two players and as many as four players at once. There are also online leaderboards to keep tabs on who ran which tracks the fastest. Finally, there is a ghost race where you can take on your friends’ fastest times.

Ultra Fighting Bros 2

The benefit of having a large screen with the iPad, in combination with its multi-touch functionality is the ability to play multiplayer games with friends on the same screen. Ultra Frighting Bros 2 takes advantage of that with a simple, but fun, single-button battling game. Face off in the cage mano-a-mano, err “bro-a-bro”, and take down (literally) your opponent. The game’s simple mechanic of touch, hold, release makes it playable to gamers of all ages, and the power ups that you unlock to use in battle keep things interesting. This is a great way to kill a few minutes with some pals.

Vainglory

Vainglory is a rarity because it is a mobile MOBA (multiplayer online battle arena) game and there simply aren’t many of those yet. Vainglory pits you and a couple of allies against three people on the other team and you must take down their towers and base. It features a variety of characters and upgrade paths to help give you an advantage over the other players. Games can last a long time and MOBAs are easy to play but tough to master in general. This is a really good game.
